Wifredo Lam [Sague la Grande, La Villa 1902-Paris, 1082]  
  1921 Attends the Academy of Plastic Arts, San Alejandro for one year.
1923 With a small pension provided by his native city, he travels to Madrid. Works in the studio of Sotomayor, the academic painter and director of the Museum of El Prado. Later resides in Cuenca.  
  1927 With others from the city of Cuenca, he exhibits there.
1931 Exhibits landscapes and portraits in the Salon of Art of Leon.  
  1932 Returns to Madrid where he initiates an interest in Surrealism which he abandons.
1936 Upon the start of the Civil War of Spain he volunteers and works in an explosives factory in Madrid.  
1937 Due to illness he is sent to the Spas of Caldes de Montbui, and there he meets Manolo Hugue. He starts painting for the local theater and starts painting intensely regardless of the lack of materials at this time.
1938 Travel to Paris with a letter from Hugue for Picasso who when arrives, becomes his friend and protector.  
  1939 Personal exhibition in the Galeria Pierre.

1940 Muestra colectiva en la Galeria May, de Paris with other artists: Leger, Braque, Klee, Ernst and Picasso.

When Paris is occupied by German troops, he moves to Marseilles. With the other French surrealists they travel to Martinique, Santo Domingo and La Habana.

Wifredo stays from 1940-1956.

  1941-1961 Exhibits in the US, Paris and Milan. Resides in Italy.
1982 Dies in Paris, France.
